Process Explorer is a free process management utility that extends its capabilities past Windows Task Manager. Process Explorer makes tracking down a process a lot easier. It shows you detailed information such as icons, command-line, full image path, memory stats, which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded, user account, security attributes, and processor time. This freeware displays two sub-windows. The top is a list of active processes and the bottom shows information on the process. If your not sure what a process is, Process Explorer can identify it by looking it up in Google which is a good way to spot spyware. Auslogics Disk Defrag is a great program for disk defragging. Lets dwell into the need to defrag. Fragmentation is caused by making and deleting files/folders, installing new software, and downloading files from the web. When you save something on your hard drive it doesn't save it in one place, it saves parts in the first available space and continues to save parts until it is fully saved. When you delete a file the space it was in is still there until a piece of a file fills that hole. This process is called fragmentation which leaves your computer being slow and could eventually crash your PC. Foxit PDF Reader is a free alternative to Adobe Reader. Foxit is incredibly small and very fast. When Foxit Reader is launched it loads instantly. It allows you to draw images, highlight text, type text and type notes on a PDF document. If you have a form to fill out, you can fill it out and save it. The text converter feature lets you convert a PDF document into a text file. If you are worried about security, Foxit Reader never connects to the internet without your permission. 7-Zip is a free file-compression utility. The program is able to shrink and unpack 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, and TAR and unpacking only is RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB, and NSIS. It is very fast when packing/unpacking files and is much better that alot of the other Zip file managers. And the cool thing I like is that it is supported in 69 different languages. If your looking for a free image manipulation program then Gimp is it. Gimp is a free image editor that does task such as photo retouching, image composition, image authoring, painting, online batch-processing system, mass production image renderer, and image-format converter. Gimp has many plug-ins and extensions so it can do just about anything possible. Some features that Gimp has that is comparable to photoshop is the channels, layers, filters and effects, masks, tabbed pallets, and editable text tools. The common file formats that Gimp supports is JPEF, GIF, PNG, TIFF and to save disk space any format can be saved with an archive extension like ZIP, GZ, or BZ2. If your a Mac user and you need a free, easy-to-use, basic image editing program then Seashore is the program for you. seashore is an open source image editing program for Mac OS X's Cocoa framework. It aims to serve the basic image editing needs of most computer users. Seashore is based around Gimp's technology and uses the same file format(XCF) and reads TIFF, JPEG, PNG, GIF and JP2000 formats as well. The read-only formats that it supports is BMP, PICT, PDF, and XBM.
